After the successful 2023 re-run of “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” which was inspired by the iconic songs of the Eraserheads, it seems that another musical centered around the songs of Parokya ni Edgar is in the works.
During the closing show of “Ang Huling El Bimbo” at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on July 23, the cast delighted the audience with a special performance featuring a modified excerpt of Parokya ni Edgar’s early hit, “Harana.” This exciting preview has left fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming musical based on the renowned band’s music.
While the cast serenaded the audience, icons were flashed on the big screen behind, representing various elements that serves as clues for the next production: a guitar and a rose, a pizza, a moustache, beer bottles, and a bird. These playful symbols were undoubtedly allusions to Parokya ni Edgar’s hit songs like “Harana,” “Picha Pie,” “Mr. Suave,” “Inuman Na!” and “Please Don’t Touch My Birdie.”
Beneath the intriguing icons, the words “Abangan 2024” emerged, hinting at the highly anticipated release of the musical in the following year. The excitement grew as a QR code appeared, inviting the enthusiastic audience members to venture a guess at what the title of the musical might be.
Adding an element of competition to the mix, the organizers sweetened the deal by offering a special reward. The first 200 individuals to correctly guess the musical’s title would be rewarded with tickets to an exclusive preview scheduled for the next year, making the entire event even more thrilling and unforgettable.
Full House Theater Company, the masterminds behind the successful production of “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” have chosen to remain silent about further specifics regarding the upcoming musical. Nevertheless, it’s quite probable that the highly anticipated show will grace the esteemed stage of the Newport Performing Arts Theater, much like their previous awe-inspiring productions.
The sequence of events appears to align beautifully, with a musical paying homage to Parokya ni Edgar following one that celebrated the legendary Eraserheads. Interestingly, Parokya ni Edgar’s own journey to fame began as they secured their big break, performing as an opening act for an Eraserheads concert, captivating the audience under the name “Comic Relief.”
It seems like destiny is weaving an enthralling musical narrative, intertwining the legacies of both iconic bands, promising an extraordinary experience for all music enthusiasts eagerly awaiting this grand spectacle.
Parokya ni Edgar’s frontman, Chito Miranda, took to Instagram to share his excitement, posting a video of the cast’s mesmerizing performance of “Harana” and describing it as “nakakakilabot” (gives you goosebumps). The video undoubtedly left fans thrilled and eager for more.
Meanwhile, “Ang Huling El Bimbo” writer, Dingdong Novenario, joined the chorus of excitement by sharing a more extended video of the performance on Facebook. However, amidst the speculation surrounding the teased musical, Novenario candidly revealed that he would not be involved in writing this particular project. Nonetheless, his support and admiration for the upcoming endeavor were evident, and fans can look forward to witnessing another creative talent breathe life into the music of Parokya ni Edgar.
