In the ever-evolving landscape of the Philippine music scene, unique and passionate artists continue to emerge, pushing boundaries and challenging conventional norms. One such trailblazing force is Pink Trash Project (PTP), a band that seamlessly blends various influences into their music to create a sound that is experimental, high-energy, and deeply relatable.
The Genesis of Pink Trash Project
Pink Trash Project, or PTP, had its humble beginnings as a solo project in 2019, initiated by the talented and vibrant Jai, known as “Ate Pink” within the band. However, Jai felt most at ease performing with a band and decided to bring her friends from her hometown in Quezon into the fold in 2020. Just as they were gearing up for more shows, the pandemic struck, putting a temporary halt to their musical journey.
When the music scene started to reawaken, Jai, now joined by Vasyl (her former producer turned bandmate), Leo, Brendan, Von, and Shan, embarked on a musical adventure that would redefine their lives. Despite initial hesitations and apprehensions, the band’s chemistry and the freedom to express themselves in their music brought them closer together. PTP’s music is unapologetically experimental, offering listeners an intricate blend of emotions and genres.
The Meaning Behind the Name
A band’s name often holds a special significance, and Pink Trash Project’s moniker is no exception. The name was born out of a complex mix of emotions and experiences. Jai recounted a period in her life when she was going through tough times, feeling like “trash” on one of her darkest days. Simultaneously, she had an affinity for the color pink. The fusion of these contrasting elements gave birth to the name “Pink Trash Project,” signifying a unique and self-reflective approach to their artistry.
Defining Their Sound
Describing PTP’s music to those unfamiliar with their sound, the band members collectively emphasize its high-energy nature. Their songs are like sonic candy, filled with intricate arrangements that defy easy categorization. Jai adds that their music is experimental yet fun, often delving into deeper emotions while remaining highly relatable to their audience.
The members of PTP draw inspiration from a wide range of musical influences. Jai looks up to the legendary Michael Jackson for his unparalleled stage presence and artistry. The band’s eclectic musical tastes include artists like Paramore, Kamikazee, Bruno Mars, Dua Lipa, UDD, and KPop sensations like Mamamoo, contributing to their genre-blurring sound.
Shan Adrian’s journey as a musician began with a deep admiration for IV of Spades, while Brendan’s love for R&B was ignited by Chris Brown. Vasyl, a fan of IV of Spades, attributes his journey in music to the band, which eventually led him to become a part of PTP.
Navigating Challenges
Like any close-knit group, PTP has had to navigate challenges, particularly regarding their busy schedules. With some members working full-time jobs and others juggling their academic commitments, finding the right balance for rehearsals and gigs can be a daunting task. However, open communication and mutual respect help them overcome these obstacles. They stress the importance of commitment and understanding each other’s limitations, ensuring that their journey as a band remains a fulfilling one.
“I make sure I remind them the importance of their words kasi meron at meron maghihintay for them. This goes within the band, in school, and in real life. We talk it out and I think the younger ones got better over time. I think my role here isn’t just to be their vocalist but also an Ate (Older Sister)” – Jai
Significant Milestones and Transformative Moments
One of the standout moments in PTP’s career was their nomination for the Best Dance/Electronic Recording at the prestigious Awit Awards in 2023. This recognition is a testament to their unique sound and dedication to pushing boundaries in the Philippine music scene. Their nomination as an independent band is a source of pride for the entire group.
Bandmates and “Guardian Angels”
The members of PTP share a bond that extends beyond the stage and recording studio. They cherish the moments of camaraderie, often marked by late-night jam sessions and heartfelt conversations. Jai recalls a particularly moving moment when her bandmates unknowingly became her “guardian angels” during a challenging period in her life. Their support and understanding deepened their connection, emphasizing that they are not just bandmates but also family.
“They are more than just my bandmates, they’re my brothers, it reflects sa music ko kasi as I always say, I let them do what they want kasi I know they were given to me for a purpose, both in life and in music. They’re guiding me where I needed to be.” – Jai
The Power of Expression through Music
For PTP, being musicians means having the power to express their emotions authentically. Music allows them to share their stories, connect with their audience, and create art that resonates with people on a profound level. It’s a form of self-expression that transcends boundaries and empowers them to chase their dreams.
“You’re able to express your feelings as it is. Although depende rin naman sa tao kung they will choose to be 100% transparent sa narararamdaman nila through their songs, napakalaking tulong ng music as a tool to communicate these words na hindi mo masabi in conversations.” – Vasyl
A Changing Filipino Music Audience
PTP acknowledges that the Filipino audience’s taste in music has evolved over the years. They attribute this transformation to the influence of KPop, which opened doors to different genres and experimental sounds. The once-restricted confines of mainstream music have expanded, giving artists like PTP the opportunity to offer something fresh and unfamiliar yet strangely familiar to listeners.
“Mas diverse na nga talaga yung taste ng Filipino audience! Mas open na sila sa iba’t-ibang tunog, kahit yung mga di conventional or kadalasang tugtugan, trip na rin nila!” – Vasyl
“Sobrang laking influence ng KPop sa changes sa taste ng Pinoy sa music, dati super restricted sa same genres, singalong, biritan, etc. But when Filipinos started to welcome Kpop, nagkaroon din ng chance yung what they call ‘weird’ sounding or ‘experimental’ sounding music na genre – kaya nagkaroon ng chance yung mga musicians like us who’s doing genres that is not known sa mainstream. Thankful kami don at sana mas marami pang tao ang mabigyan ng chance ang music na katulad ng samin – something new but feels familiar.” – Jai
Unveiling the Raw Emotions Behind "Narcissism"
The Raw Emotions Behind “Narcissism”
“Narcissism” is more than just a song; it’s a raw and personal account of a real-life experience. Jai explained that the song draws from her three-year journey in a narcissistic relationship. In such relationships, the primary responsibility often becomes maintaining the partner’s image, regardless of their flaws. Through “Narcissism,” Jai found the courage to release the emotions she had kept hidden for years. Although she had subtly hinted at her story in previous releases, she had always attributed them to a friend’s experiences. However, it was time to unveil her truth.
The Creative Process
Creating “Narcissism” was an emotional journey for Jai and the band. It began with Jai composing the song’s foundation, drawing from a previous song she had written but couldn’t release during her relationship. She started with the verse “I got tired of pretending,” and the rest of the song flowed from there. Jai then shared a demo with her bandmates, who listened and provided feedback. The collaborative process allowed them to refine the song and add their unique PTP touch.
Brendan played a crucial role in cutting the demo to make it more radio-friendly. Then, as a band, they gathered in the studio to fine-tune the song’s dynamics, arrangement, and musical elements. Vasyl brought his electronic expertise to infuse the track with the signature “PTP elements,” enhancing its distinct sound.
Interestingly, when Jai sends demos to her bandmates, she often receives no immediate reaction from them. However, this doesn’t deter her, as their creative process involves refining and evolving the music collectively during rehearsals.
Favorite Lines and Their Significance
Each member of PTP shared their favorite lines from “Narcissism” and explained why they resonate with them. Shan Adrian finds the line “Dance like you mean it” catchy and fun. Brendan connects deeply with the line “I won’t tell a lie” from the bridge due to the powerful delivery and emotional depth. Vasyl resonates with “I got tired of pretending,” as he acknowledges the exhaustion that comes with wearing a facade. For Jai, the line “Now the show is done, come and take a bow” holds immense significance, as it marks the end of a painful act and a plea for the narcissist to stop pretending.
The Message for Listeners
With “Narcissism,” PTP hopes to convey powerful messages to their listeners. Brendan urges people not to settle for less and to recognize their worth. Vasyl emphasizes vigilance and discernment in relationships, as appearances can be deceiving. Jai’s hope is for those in similar situations to find solace in the song, to sing their hearts out, and to know they are not alone. Ultimately, she wishes for them to gather the courage to end the show and move forward.
“I hope that whoever is in the same situation as where I was, I know it’s hard for them to just walk away and tell people about it, kaya sana when they listen to this song, they can sing their hearts out – cry as much as they can – and feel comforted that somebody knows their struggle – that they are not alone. And maybe, just maybe, someday.. They get the courage to walk away and bow at the end of the show.” – Jai
What Lies Ahead for PTP
The band was originally planning a tour for “The Story,” but due to scheduling conflicts, they decided to celebrate with a grand party on November 3rd and 4th. This event, known as the Pink Trash Party, coincides with Jai’s birthday, PTP’s anniversary, and a celebration of music. They’ve also recently released a music video for “Narcissism” and are in the process of creating a full album.
The Transformative Power of Music
Music, according to Brendan of PTP, has the incredible power to change people and alter their perceptions. It can uplift moods, evoke emotions, and, in some cases, provide solace and validation to those grappling with personal struggles. PTP’s songs are a testament to this transformative power, capable of brightening a listener’s mood, moving them to tears, or empowering them to escape from toxic relationships.
For Vasyl, music serves as a means of communication and connection. Many individuals face unspoken challenges and battles, and music offers a way to convey the message that “we’re here for you” or “we understand what you’re going through.” Through their music, PTP strives to be a source of comfort for those who feel alone in their struggles.
Jai, as a songwriter, acknowledges the impact of music on her own life. She sees her songs as a reflection of her experiences and emotions. When writing, she aims to touch on sensitive topics, particularly related to mental health. By doing so, she hopes that listeners will find understanding and solace in their music, recognizing that someone else has been through similar struggles.
The Emphasis on Mental Health in PTP’s Music
PTP’s music often delves into themes related to mental health. Brendan believes that songs that stand for something are more fulfilling to create than those solely focused on love. For Vasyl, addressing these issues, whether directly or indirectly, is essential. Discussing heavy topics through music can make them more accessible and relatable, serving as a form of therapy for both the creators and listeners
“Mas masarap sa pakiramdam pag yung songs mo they stand for something kesa straight up na puro lang sa love” – Brendan
Jai’s songwriting process is deeply personal, often stemming from her own experiences and emotions. She didn’t plan to focus on mental health, but it naturally emerged as a theme because of the challenges she had faced. She recognizes the importance of being a voice for those who may be going through similar struggles and aims to provide comfort and understanding.
“I didn’t really plan for it to be like this. Siguro it’s because of the things I have been through. There really are times that I felt no one would understand what the heck I’m going through so I just write it down on a piece of paper for myself, make tunes for it – you know.. like a journal with notes but then suddenly it’s a song. I know the importance of having someone who understands you kaya I want to be that person who people can say ‘ay oo nga pala, gets ako ni Ate Pink’.” – Jai
Balancing Social Impact and Creative Freedom
Creating music that has a social impact doesn’t necessarily restrict PTP’s creative freedom. Brendan believes that some limits naturally exist when writing songs, such as avoiding explicit content that could negatively influence listeners. However, their songs generally fall within acceptable boundaries.
Vasyl concurs that it’s essential to consider the social impact of their music, particularly because it can reach a wide audience. While there’s a balance to be struck, it doesn’t significantly hinder their creative freedom. They understand the importance of writing songs that are suitable for their target audience while conveying meaningful messages.
“Dapat talaga laging iniisip yun (Social Impact) and I don’t think hindi naman siya nakaka-restrict ng creative freedom. There are lots of things to write about, pero at the same time, there’s only a certain amount of things you can write about na magiging suitable for your target audience. You never know nga lang kung kanino aabot ang song mo, kaya always be mindful sa pagsulat!” – Vasyl
Jai, on the other hand, acknowledges that she unconsciously considers the social impact of her songs. While she writes for herself, she recognizes that people relate to her music and consider it their anthem. She strives to stay true to herself while being mindful of sensitive topics. For her, this careful approach doesn’t restrict her creative freedom but ensures that her music remains authentic and empathetic.
The Importance of Social Media
In today’s music landscape, trending on social media platforms can significantly impact an artist’s success. Brendan believes that PTP’s music, particularly songs like “Narcissism,” which deal with toxic relationships, can resonate with many people. Trending would mean that more individuals get to hear their empowering messages, potentially leading to positive changes in their lives.
Vasyl agrees, emphasizing that trending on social media platforms can have a substantial impact. It broadens the reach of their music and allows them to touch the lives of more listeners.
Jai understands the significance of trending but acknowledges the challenges faced by independent musicians like PTP. They don’t always have the resources and marketing support of major labels, making it a tough journey. She appreciates artists who have achieved success independently and is determined to keep making music that resonates with her, regardless of whether it goes viral.
“It’s hard for independent musicians like us who don’t have the backup to help us market our song or for musicians like us who play ‘weird’ or ‘something different’ music. Kaya idol namin ang Sunkissed Lola for making it big even being in the independent umbrella, shoutout po! Hihi. Jim Bacarro of Cheats once told me that ‘as long as it’s a jam for you, keep making it’ – kaya hindi ako masyado focus if my song is the type to go big, our genre is really hard to market kaya di ako masyadong umaasa ba, ganon, pero alam mo yun, one day, sana, we get to have our chance din. Sabi rin ni Dilaw sakin one time, ‘kahit isang song lang Jai’ – I just need one song to go viral and everything will follow through pero sabi niya rin ‘pero ikaw pa rin bahala sa diskarte niyo'” – Jai
Lessons Learned in the Music Industry
In their journey through the music industry, PTP has gained valuable insights into what success entails. Brendan emphasizes the importance of connections. While talent is crucial, the right network can accelerate an artist’s rise. However, he emphasizes the need to maintain healthy relationships and avoid exploiting them.
“Connections are important. Minsan di lang purong galing magdadala sayo pataas sa music industry. Pag tama ang network mo, plus skills mo, mas mabilis kang aangat (pero wala ka dapat tatapakang tao, healthy lang ganern)”- Brendan
Vasyl reiterates the significance of connections, stating that many talented individuals haven’t reached their full potential due to a lack of proper guidance and connections. He acknowledges that skills are essential but considers them a bonus.
Jai highlights the impact of money and label support in the industry. Being affiliated with a label and having financial backing for music videos, promotions, and events can make a significant difference. However, she emphasizes that remaining authentic and cheering for others is crucial throughout the journey.
“I found out talaga that money and support from the labels play such a big part in the success in the industry. Having your name tied to a label sounds different. Having the money to create your MVs, the team to promote your songs on social media, and a team to mount your events would lead you to success. Minsan maco-confuse ka kung talented ka ba talaga dahil sometimes it just doesn’t work your way like how it works with others but what I always say to myself is that I’ll keep on clapping and cheering for others until it’s my time.” – Jai
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Artists
Brendan encourages aspiring artists to keep pushing forward, reminding them that everyone will eventually get their break. He advises patience and perseverance.
Vasyl shares a message of resilience, emphasizing that as long as one is alive, they can continue to explore and create. He believes that continuous growth and self-exploration are vital.
Jai’s advice to fellow artists is simple but powerful: “As long as it’s a jam for you, keep making it.” She emphasizes the importance of staying true to one’s art and enjoying the process.
In a world where music has the power to transform lives, Pink Trash Project stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Through their introspective and emotionally charged music, they strive to make a positive impact on society, one heartfelt song at a time.
