From A Blog to Music

The band’s origins trace back to high school, where Yuri and Leo were already close friends and had a band that competed in various Battle of the Bands competitions. However, it was in 2019 that they decided to form Janey Tearjerky, with the primary purpose of bringing life to the original compositions of their “mommyger,” the band’s manager and composer. This marked the birth of the band and the beginning of their musical journey.

The name “Janey Tearjerky” was inspired by a Facebook blog that shared lines of random thoughts and lyrics from unreleased songs, mostly categorized as “tearjerkers.” The tear-inducing emotional depth of Eheads’ “Julie Tearjerky” also played a role in inspiring the name choice. The name “Janey” comes from the blog owner, who is now the band’s manager and composer. They chose to retain this unique name, and it has now become synonymous with their heart-stirring music.

Musical Identity and Inspiration

Janey Tearjerky’s sound can be best described as alternative rock, with some elements of indie rock woven into their compositions. They take inspiration from a diverse range of musical references, combining local influences like Kamikazee and December Avenue with international inspirations such as Paramore and Taylor Swift. This mix of influences culminates in a lyrical and storytelling vibe that resonates deeply with their audience.

We actually have different musical references but we found that it works and jives with what we wanted to sound. It’s a mix of local and foreign inspirations such as Kamikazee, December Avenue, Paramore and Taylor Swift. Most of our songs are lyrical and usually a story-telling vibe.

Among their tracks, “Empacho” stands out as the band’s favorite. Despite its release coinciding with the pandemic, the song has garnered a substantial following, thanks to its heartfelt lyrics and unique beats. Lines like “Umiiyak sumisigaw, nahihirapang makawala sa damdaming akala ko ay ‘yun na, hindi pala” have struck a chord with listeners, making it an emotionally impactful piece for the band.

And as with any band, creative differences can arise. Janey Tearjerky tackles this by involving all members in the song production process. Each member contributes their unique musical preferences and ideas, resulting in a harmonious blend that reflects the essence of the band.

The biggest hurdle they faced was managing their time and schedules, given that each member had other commitments, such as college studies and jobs. They successfully released new songs, performed alongside great artists in launch gigs, and even played at dream venues, like 19 East, as a front act for Rise High. Collaborating with Doodletoons, a clothing brand that supports their music, has also been a highlight of their career so far.

“Unang Sayaw” Patungong Walang Hanggan

Every song has a story, but some tales are as magical as the music they inspire. For Janey Tearjerky, their latest single, “Unang Sayaw” has experienced so much delays but on a perfect timing.

The story of “Unang Sayaw” began in 2019 when the band originally planned to perform it at a wedding. However, as fate would have it, the pandemic disrupted their plans, and the song remained unfinished. Despite the setback, the band held onto the hope that someday, they would find the perfect occasion for this special track.

In 2022, an opportunity arose as another wedding event approached. With determination and excitement, Janey Tearjerky revisited “Unang Sayaw” and brought it to completion. The stars aligned perfectly, and on June 1, 2023, the song took center stage as the couple’s official wedding anthem.

This track was originally written in 2019, started as a plan to play for a wedding of Gio and Joebelle but pandemic gets in the way of finishing the song since we cannot meet up to collaborate and start recording the track. We were able to finish the song for Lloyd and Kat in 2022 and it was perfect timing to be an official wedding song last June 1, 2023 as they tie the knot.

The creative process behind “Unang Sayaw” was unlike any other for the band. Typically known for their poignant and emotional tracks, creating a wedding song presented a unique challenge. Yuri, Leo, Yamie, Wan, and Bryan put their hearts and minds into the composition, meticulously crafting each line with a poetic touch to capture the essence of everlasting love.

Creating a song not as broken as the rest of our tracks was really a challenge. The lines were really thought of carefully and took longer to finish than the rest of our songs. The rhythm was first made by Leo, then the lyrics came in. We had to be more “poetic” for a wedding song, trying to get deeper contexts.

Behind the scenes of the recording process, the band found themselves in Circle City, working with Sega and Esjay, two of their revered friends and inspirations in the industry. The recording sessions stretched from sundown until almost sunrise, as the band members poured their hearts into the song after finishing their respective school and work commitments. Amidst the long hours, they bonded over food trips and shared laughter, creating memories that added a touch of magic to the recording experience.

When asked about their hopes for the listeners of “Unang Sayaw,” Janey Tearjerky expressed the desire for people to embrace the idea that there is someone meant for them, even after enduring heartaches. The song reminds us that love has the power to lead us to our own “first dance,” a dance that lasts forever.

Speaking of first dances, the band members themselves fondly reminisced about their own experiences. Bryan shared a charming tale of an acquaintance party where he had a crush on someone. With a heart full of nerves, he was approached by his crush, who asked him to dance. Embracing the moment, Bryan created a beautiful memory that would stay with him forever.

When asked if they believed in forever (“Walang Hanggan”), the band unanimously expressed their belief in eternal love. They drew inspiration from their grandparents, whose unwavering commitment to each other exemplified the vow of “til death do us part.”

Looking ahead, Janey Tearjerky has an exciting lineup of songs ready for recording and release. With two tracks already completed and set for release in September and October, and the rest scheduled for the final quarter of the year, fans can anticipate an array of heartfelt melodies. The band plans to launch each song with a gig and also embark on a tour with provincial stops to connect with more followers.
